Some of you are rich -- don't bother trying to deny it, you know who you are. I want you to fund a new set of Science Fiction book awards, to be called "The Peadars". And wait! Wait right there! I don't want the usual "Best Book of the Year", or "Medal for Author with the Most Friends".

What I demand is:

Best World-Building in SF
Best World-Building in Fantasy
Best Leading Character
Best Supporting Character
Most Mind Blowing Concept in a Work of SF
Most Mind Blowing Concept in a Work of Fantasy

Oh, there can be others too for costuming, make-up, music and the like, but this would make a nice start.

Just last night I started reading a first novel. The writing was rough to be honest, but the world-building was 8.3 times better than most things that win the Hugo. It doesn't have a hope of winning anything. So, your job. Is to make it happen.

Now, does anybody want to nominate for any of the categories in next year's Peadars?

I imagine Ann Leckie's Ancillary Justice would be in with a shout for the SF World-Building. What do you think?

A worthy cause.
I'll give it more thought after I've sold the movie rights for $20M

Don't accept a cent less!

If the people who did Chicken Run and The Miracle Maker
were interested, I'd let them have it for $2M,
because I'd love to see a formation of B-17s in claymation.
For anyone else, it's a firm $20M

I would probably want to nominate Odinsbarn by Siri Pettersen to all the fantasy related ones. Just because I'm so utterly in love the book, and have become a teenboop groupie fangirl!

I must admit, I never heard of that one!

It's Norwegian. ;-) I think pretty much "everyone" in the Norwegian fandom has heard of it. It was published this autumn, and I don't think I've heard a single ill word about it, just praise.

It looks interesting! Here's hoping for a translation in the near future...

I love the idea, and I haven't a single idea whom to nominate this year for any of them. I think the award name needs some work, however.

Anything called "Peadar" is a guarantee of quality. The public know it.

Some awards have two names, e.g. the Man Booker. So I'd come in with you on some funding providing that it's called the Ben Peadar, in that order.

Ha! I knew you were rich! But what a disgusting ego you have trying to name the award after yourself :(

Sadly, I'm not reading enough new SFF to participate.

Plus, I'd read your initial contest as "best world burning" which I thought was a simply awesome award...
Dec. 18th, 2013 02:35 pm (UTC)
Well, yes. Word burning is fun. When I am world dictator and I am banning all your works, I shall add them first to a bonfire...
Dec. 18th, 2013 03:33 pm (UTC)
I would vote for you. Nothing immortalizes words faster than a good burning.

I absolutely love it! I am with you all the way Peadar!
Dec. 18th, 2013 07:49 pm (UTC)
Excellent! This is an idea that will conquer the world!

What will be your equivalent of The Razzies? How about The Thrrrrps ?

Worst World Building - "It's like medieval Europe with magic! Well, not actual medieval Europe, no-one ever dies of tetanus or toothache and all the women are either royalty or prostitutes"
Worst Leading Character - "He's a thief who is nice!"
Worst Supporting Character - "She's a fiesty tomboy who isn't bound by society's rules!"
Worst Concept, It Blows - "What if the government was using New Science Thingy to control the population... but the population think the New Science Thingy is great and don't believe Our Hero that it's bad!"

And my personal favourites
Worst OCR In An Ebook
Worst Binding Or Paper Quality In A Paper Book

I think we will have to accept all of your suggestions.

Except that in the one about women characters, you left out toothless crones. I always need a few of those for the story to feel realistic...

Now we have: Tomboys (yum!), prostitutes (heart of gold, please), Queenie (she needs braids to pull on) and... the stick-shaking crone.

What on earth are you complaining about? That's four!
